As a young boy he attended school in Oklahoma and grew up helping his father plant and harvest crops and raising mules along with their cows and horses. Petersen #359 Cordova American Legion Club. He also enjoyed serving with the color guard at many funerals and other events. In California, he was a member of the Rosemead Masonic Lodge F&AM and a member of the Teamsters Union.
