A celebration of his amazing life will be held at his home on July 4th, 2022. Those who knew and loved Gene are welcome to join his family, more details will become available on social media. Memorials may be given to the family or donated to your favorite animal charity.
Gene (Eugene) Martin Filbert was born September 10, 1951, in York, Nebraska to Martin and Josie (Mohr) Filbert, and passed away unexpectedly on Friday, February 18, 2022, at his home in rural Milford at the age of 70.
Gene attended Lincoln High School, graduating class of 1969. He was enlisted in the Nebraska National Guard 1969-1973. During his early years Gene struggled with alcoholism, resulting in felony charges. Despite this rough start, he went on to live 41 years alcohol free. In 1982, Gene met his soulmate and lifelong best friend and would go on to build a life with her. On February 20, 2013, he was granted the first felony DUI pardon ever issued by State of Nebraska. Gene enjoyed laughing, teasing others, spending time with his grandchildren, laying on the couch watching Westerns with his dogs, and helping dear friends during harvest.
Survivors include his wife, Karen Filbert, children and spouses, Shawn and Jenna Filbert and Kris and Tim Derr, all of Milford, seven grandchildren, Tyler Filbert, Rorie Filbert, Lyla Filbert, Liam Filbert, Ryker Derr, Lanie Filbert and Addilyn Derr, and a host of other relatives and friends. Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Josie Filbert and parents-in-law, Clifford and Marylin Johnson. Along with his favorite aunt-in-law Kitty Mateja.
