Josephine Elizabeth Hernandez 85, of Lincoln, passed away on October 15, 2023, in Lincoln, NE. Born July 23, 1938, to Lorenzo Rayas Hernandez and Josephine Alonzo in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. Graduated from Gering High School in 1957. Josephine was united in marriage to John S. Hernandez in Scottsbluff, Nebraska on November 22, 1958, and to this union five children. Deborah, Diana, Ernie, Edward, and Michael were born. She was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Lincoln.
Josephine worked for the Head Start program as an aide. She was also employed at the Wilber Nursing Home from 1977 through 1999; Friendship Village in Tempe, AZ from 1999 through 2003 and Crestview Care Center in Milford from 2003 to 2004. Josephine wore many hats through the years working in nursing homes, from a dietary aid, a cook, housekeeping, and laundry. In her spare time Josephine enjoyed sewing, crocheting, and baking. Her children and grandchildren loved it when she would bake cookies. She also made several wedding cakes.
She is survived by her children, Deborah Hernandez of Lincoln; Diana (Mark) Oliva of Milford; Ernie (Brenda) Hernandez of Harbine; Edward John Hernandez of Wilber; Michael (Melanie) Hernandez of Chandler, Arizona; grandchildren, Derek (Sara) Vesely; Antasia (Juan) Leon, Joshua (Courtney) Vesely; Nathan (Sami) Vesely; Rhiannon (Shaun) Baumhover; Erik (Nickie) Oliva; Nichole Hernandez; Nick Hernandez; Miranda (Calvin) Katz; Mirisa Hernandez; Kayla Smith; Jonathan Hernandez; 18 great-grandchildren; Brother, Rudy (Cora) Hernandez of Gering; four sisters; Esther Hernandez, Doris (Arnold) Longoria all of Lincoln; Gloria Rodriguez of Gering; Connie Hernandez of Greeley, Colorado; Sister-in-law Mary Hernandez of Lincoln, Brother-in-law Louie Damian of Florida. Many nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband, John S. Hernandez; four sisters, Mary Munoz; Jennie Munoz; Jesse Aguirre; Beatrice Damian; two brothers, Edward Hernandez, and Lawrence Hernandez.
A Rosery will be on October 19, 2023, 9:30 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. at the St. John’s Catholic Church, in Lincoln, NE; 7601 Vine Street.
Graveside Inurnment will be 3:00 p.m. and held at the Blue Mound Cemetery in Milford, NE.
