Memorial Services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 11, 2022, at Sunrise Country Manor, Milford and will be laid to rest next to his late wife at Blue Mound Cemetery. Lauber Funeral and Cremation Services, Milford, is entrusted with the care and arrangements.
Virgil Paul Gouker was born October 26, 1929, in Beatrice, Nebraska the youngest child to EJ and Ethel Mae (Chipman) Gouker and died Thursday, March 3, 2022, at Sunrise Country Manor near Milford at the age of 92.
Virgil’s father operated the Thompson Grocery Store in Beatrice where he trained Virgil to stock and deliver groceries via horse and wagon or buggy to their many customers. Some of Virgil’s early years were spent at the Beatrice Development Center where he met and married Mabel Cumpston in March of 1972. Together they resided at the Meadows Assisted Living Center, Our Home Assisted Living and later the Waverly Care Center. They moved to Sunrise Country Manor near Milford in 2006.
During his residence in Lincoln, Virgil was active in lawn care, trimming bushes and pruning small trees plus other outdoor jobs that he liked. In 1996, Virgil received a distinguished service award from the Goodwill Industries of Lincoln for many years of faithful service he volunteered. Virgil also liked sports, baseball, soccer, football, wrestling, boxing and especially if they were from the Big Red. He also collected trophies and baseball cards. He simply enjoyed being outside in the sun.
Survivors include his cousins and their families, and his many friends in Lincoln and Sunrise Country Manor.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Mabel in 2009, his sister, Betty Wieler in 2012 and a niece, Susan Wieler in 2017.
